Natural African American Hairstyles

I almost always love my natural African American Hairstyles, but there is something about this one that I really love!

For the past couple of weeks, I wanted to do a hairstyle with yellow beads.

I didn’t matter whether it was braids or twists – I just wanted yellow beads and I FINALLY got the chance today!

And, more importantly, Bunny wanted them too. (I have never and will never do a hairstyle that she didn’t want me to).

So anyway, this hair style has lots and lots of yellow hair beads!

Super cute, but we took the beads off about two days later so they wouldn’t damage her hair.

So my creativity has been in a rut lately so half cornrows, half braids is pretty much my fall back style.

Yes, out of the million of natural African American hairstyles out there, I run out of ideas at times =/

I love that you can do braids in the back (with or without beads), twists in the back (with or without beads), two ponytails, a ponytail, or a bun!

TIP! I started with clean, detangled, stretched hair and I recommend this for best results. Click here to learn how I prepare hair for my cornrow hairstyles.

For braiding the hair you’ll need:

  • Rat tail comb
  • Wide tooth comb
  • Hair moisturizer
  • Hair clips to section hair
  • Beads

To begin, I parted her hair in half from one ear to the other one and clipped the front out of the way for now.

I begin sectioning off large-ish boxes (I’m still scared from having to take out the mini twists and I couldn’t bring myself to do small braids) and braided them all the way to the end where I finished each braid off with yellow beads.

I repeated until I’d finished the box braids in the back.

For the next part, I did a cornrow design and braided the cornrows all the way to the end – adding beads when I got to the ends.

Lastly, I sprayer her hair with a water/olive oil spritz to help seal in moisture and add a bit of a sheen to her hair.

The whole style took less than two hours and we should get at least a week and a half out of it.
