1. They keep the hair ends protected from wind, sun, and friction. 2. The lock in moisture (which your hair NEEDS) 3. They prevent split ends and breakage (unless you’re doing your style too tightly) 4. They allow for no manipulation which helps to prevent breakage from combing.
Some examples of protective styles are as the following:
1. Head wraps (I’ve never actually worn one but I’ve heard they make great protective ‘do’s) 2. Twists (I typically pin and twist mine up) 3. Cornrows (LOVE THEM!) 4. Flat Twists (one of the first styles I learned to do on my own head) 5. Individual Braids (but man is this style a pain to take down!) 6. Tams/Slouchy Hats (Yet again, not a style I’ve ever done)
Remember the following: Air dries your ends out and makes them thin and weak. Friction between your hair and your clothes makes it even worse. Wearing your hair down gets it caught in your jewelry, causing even more breakage.
Please Note: I must also give a word of caution when it comes to protective styles that involve bobby pins. When taking the bobby pins out make sure to slide them gently from the hair.
If bobby pins are pulled too quickly they may rip the ends of the hair. I am very careful with bobby pins and because I’ve pulled hair out many times on accident!
