Dutch Braid

A Dutch Braid is braided the same way you braid a cornrow and the exact opposite of a French Braid.

So if you can cornrow, this will be very easy for you.

The only real difference between the two is that, when you Dutch braid, you’re usually doing only one or two braids, but when you cornrow, you’re doing several.

It's that simple!

You’ll Need:

No matter what hair type, it’s best to start with detangled, slightly damp hair. Brush the hair back; the dampness should tame the fly-away hairs and make them lie down.

Beginning at the top of the head, use your fingers or a rat-tail comb to section off and gather the hair for the braid. Pull the section of hair up and away from the head. Make a "peace" sign with the fingers of one hand, and use it to divide the hair into three even strands.

Use both hands to braid the hair, pulling the sections tight. Hold two sections in the left hand and the third section in the right hand. Bring the right-hand section under, rather than over, the middle section, and grab it with the left hand.

Take the outside section from the left hand and bring it under what is now the middle strand. Be sure to maintain tension on the hair strands. Always pull the hair under the middle strand.

Continue the braid, bringing the outside strands under the middle strand, alternating left and right. Pick up and add hair from either side of the head to the outside strands before weaving it under the middle strand.

Work down the back of the head, braiding down the center while pulling in additional hair each time.

To keep the hair from unraveling, secure the ends with a ponytail or add a bow.

Or try: Four Strand Braid, Fish Bone Braid, Braided Headband.
