African American Natural Hair

African American Natural Hair differs from all other hair types.

It’s made up of thousands and thousands of tiny, kinky curls (approximately 190 hairs per square centimeter); each with a mind of its own.

Our hair really is quite amazing.

African-American hair does SEEM to grow slightly slower than Caucasian hair, due to the tightly curled pattern, making it hard for moisture to run down it, meaning it often breaks off. This is also the reason why our hair is drier.

African American natural hair does grow!

In Africa, natural hair is celebrated through different hairstyles, whereas here in America, it’s often made fun of. It’s so sad how something so embraced over there, has such a hard time being accepted in other parts of the world.

There are a lot of reasons why people will and won’t go natural, and I’ll address the first one first.

A great reason to go natural is because you’re fed up of living in the hair salon, of handing over hundreds if not thousands of dollars every year. Maybe you want to spend more time living places outside of the hair salon. Maybe you’re tired of your hair breaking off in damaged hunks.

And if you’re not, perhaps you should be.

Or maybe you are one of the people, or at least know one of them, that refuses to natural under any circumstance. That, even after you learned of how you’re breaking and drying out your curls to the point of them falling out faster than they’re growing, you’re still hard set on keeping your hair relaxed.

This isn’t to say that all relaxed hair is broken to pieces and falling out. There are some people with long, healthy, relaxed hair. I just haven’t ever met any.

Natural or relaxed, it’ll always be your hair to style and do as you please. Staying natural or relaxing your hair is your choice. And with that said, I don’t think anyone should ever make you do anything to your hair that you don’t want.

I personally don’t allow anyone to do my hair but me, no matter how many years they may have spent in college studying about hair. That’s just the way I am.

So if you’re ready to take the plunge – whichever way it may be – go for it and reap the rewards and fight through the hard times because it’s your hair!

Sharing is caring!
