There are some African American hair styles that work better with straight hair, which is fine, so how do you straighten your thick, African-American hair without damaging it BUT actually getting it straight?
I typically straighten my hair between one and four times a year, sometimes less, but often more. I enjoy straight and I don't mind taking excellent care of my hair so I can use heat as I please.
HOWEVER! I do have to cut at least two or three inches off every year, because I use heat. I like cutting my hair (I'm super scissor happy) and I'm not growing my hair out, so this works for ME.

One thing to remember is that natural hair will revert back to its natural state the second water touches it unless you’ve damaged it, also known as heat training.
(Heat training is where you knowingly or unknowingly use heat on your hair so much that you destroy it into staying straight, much like a relaxer would. This is very bad for your hair and never a good idea.)
Maintaining your natural straightened hair is probably the most difficult part of the game. All those products that are filled with water and other moisturizers? Yeah, those will only make your hair revert back to curly if applied incorrectly.
So how do you keep your hair from getting thirsty? The trick is to use moisturizers only at night, wrap your hair immediately afterwards, and keep it wrapped until its completely dry again.
Another common mistake is when a small part of your hair gets messed up and you just need a quick touch up. Right? WRONG! Applying heat on top of heat repeatedly without exposure to water is very bad for your hair. Try finding a style that covers the problem area instead.
Don't forget to "like" if you enjoyed!
